A ROARING DEFIANCE

For the Fashion & Visual Culture minor, I created a story poster inspired by a fashion design. I chose a 1998 Dior design influenced by the 1920s, which led me to the concept of a flapper girl. The underlying message explores a woman challenging the social norms imposed on her.

For this project I worked on my photography skills, directing, styling and visual storytelling.

The story
It’s the Roaring Twenties, and the world is alive with the sound of change. Women are stepping into new freedoms, pushing against the boundaries once set for them, eager for even more. My character, a woman who refuses to conform to society’s expectations of women, is there to make a statement.

One evening, she attends a ball on her own, the atmosphere rich with excitement. As she glides through the crowd, she notices people casting curious glances her way, whispering among themselves. But nobody can take away her confidence.

With all eyes on her, she decides to step into the center of the room, commanding the attention of everyone around her. She begins to dance in her dress, shorter than anyone’s there. She uses her dance as her voice; no words are needed. Every step is a step closer to her freedom.
When the music ends, everyone starts to clap, turning their judgment into her statement.
